March 29, 2005
Okay, time has been tight so I had to skip last week's
update. I'm working my ass off now trying to catch up, and at the same
time get everything settled in at home. It feels great to be this busy,
but a few days off would definitely be nice. Easter weekend was pretty
cool, as you can see for
yourself. Before I launch into this half-assed update (I'm sorry
folks, I'm just swamped - but it's still better than nothing at all...), let me
first congratulate Mr. & Mrs. Lec Zorn
(aka Steven & Sherri McAtee) on their new baby! Pictures can be found here.
Work
Continues on Jack Frost Album
Drums have been completed on the cover song I rearranged for Jack's
upcoming solo album. Guitars will be recorded today. I'm now
scoring an acoustic song for the album and when I say scoring, I mean for an
orchestra! It's a labor of love, but I can't wait until it's behind
me. I want to get this right, so I've pretty much put everything else on
hold until I get this done (including, sadly, these updates.... ).
Introducing...Rev
Jones
Jack introduced me to an amazing bassist named Rev
Jones. Rev & I admire each other's work (the guy seriously tears
it up onstage!), and are talking about putting something together. Rev
has been working with Michael
Schenker for awhile now, and is in the studio working on bass tracks for
their upcoming album
Tales of Rock 'n' Roll - 25 years of MSG. He's also working on
tracks for Jack's new album, as well as Jeff Martin's (Badlands, Racer X) new
release. More to follow...
JSS
performs Acoustic Gig
I've been doing a little work on the sidelines this month for the
upcoming Soul
Sirkus tour, and want to thank my industry friends who helped pitch
in. Jeff
invited us to a special unplugged show last week, where he
performed with Howie
Simon and Voice McGinley. (Voice actually used to play percussion in my dad's
band Fugly.) This gave Kim & I a much needed night out, so after dinner at
the Rainbow we got to experience the awesomely bizarre Club Vodka
firsthand.
This was a very different approach to Jeff's live set (an
acoustic show with the Club's trademark go-go dancers pulsing along to...Purple
Rain? lmao) and the music was reminiscent of the fun jams in Jeff's
living room - expect now we all got to sit in and participate. Also
in attendance were Chuck
Wright (Quiet Riot), Glen
Sobel, Brian Young (David Lee Roth), and
celeb photographer Jeff Findley, who took these and more
pictures of this awesome evening.
March 16, 2005
It
seems these updates have been more and more late as the weeks
go on. I've been getting used to be a daddy, while Kim
gets used to me spending 8 hours a day on those songs you all
love so much! It's taking some time, but it's really
exciting for both of us - and I'm getting a lot done now.
I
knocked out another song for Jack
Frost this week, and am working on the next one. I don't want to
reveal too much, except to say that the album is filled with
some exciting guest stars, and I have to have it all finished
by the end of the week! So expect more delays in these
updates until I knock all this out.
Shoot
- I've got so many items I haven't gotten around to
posting! Let's start with this one:
Eric endorses pedals from

I
met a great guy at the Guitar Player Magazine party in
January. His name is Lucky, and he works for Godlyke Pedals.
We spent a good hour by the open bar, talking about how great
these pedals would sound running through keyboard leads - mine
in particular! Further discussions revolved around my
interest in the new Williams
Keyboard Guitar, and how this exciting new instrument
would sound through Godlyke's Distortion line. We were
unable to meet up before the Seven
Witches DVD taping, so
Lucky was kind enough to bring the pedals by my wife's house
as we were loading up her moving truck! (Have you ever
heard of a company doing something as cool as that?) I'm still experimenting with the pedals
(in between these marathon recording sessions), and already I
can say that their Distortion and Flanger pedals sound wild
with my Korg Triton! I'm looking forward to a fruitful relationship
wtih the folks over at Godlyke, and am anxious to hear the pedals
wtih the new Williams guitar. Please visit
their website at http://www.godlyke.com/!
Thanks again guys!
Another
Chapter with
The Rainy Thursdays
have been getting a great response from the My Space page,
which now has four complete songs featuring my keyboard
madness. (There is also an
excellent merchandise page where you can order Rainy
Thursdays shirts, mouse pads, and the notebook above.) Thanks to
everyone for all the kind words - I'm really excited about
this project, and the band has asked me to do a few more
songs. Fortunately they don't need them right
away. We seem to have found our sound, and I hope you
all stop by
to check it out.
JSS
Acoustic Gig
Jeff Scott Soto is performing
a rare, one-night-only acoustic set on Thursday, March 24 at Club Vodka with guitarist
Howie Simon. To promote this show, Jeff and Howie will be guests of DJ Will at
KNAC.COM radio on Sunday, March 20 at 11:30 am PST. Jeff and Howie will talk about Soto's "Lost In The Translation" CD, Jeff's new band
SOUL SIRKUS, and will premiere tracks from the new live TALISMAN CD, "5 Men Live", out on March 21 on Frontiers Records.
Vox Tempus Voted #4
Newcomer by
Thanks to the readers of Metal
Storm for including us in their 2004 Reader's Poll! Vox
Tempus was voted # 4 in the Best Newcomer category. They write "If
you’re a fan of all the North-American masters of Progressive Metal like
Rush or Queensr˙che, then without any doubt, Vox
Tempus is for you. Including ex-members of Equinox and Takara, Vox
Tempus is one of the best newcomers of the last couple of years
regarding classic Prog Metal. “In The Eye Of Time” their first album, it
is a little jewel of technical and progressive music. Great melodies, great
vocals, great choruses, no doubt that we will hear a lot about them soon…" Thanks
guys!
March 8, 2005
Well
it's been a week of playing catch-up. I took the week
off to get settled in with my new family, and enjoy this
winter heat wave - but the world has kept on moving, and I've
got a lot of work to do. Everything here feels really
good. Thanks to all the friends who continue to send
well wishes in our Wedding Guestbook, and especially those
who keep submitting pictures
from our big day! You guys really are the best.
My mom, Kim, me & my sis against the NY Skyline
We've been moving furniture around and the place is looking like a real
home. I love that. I finally reassembled my home studio, and
have been working on some songs for Jack
Frost's solo record that I have to get done in the next two weeks.
The first of these is a cover song that we are really fond of, which will be
immediately recognizable, but you'd never recognize it! Some other things
coming up that I won't mention until it's 100% confirmed - but it's shaping
up to be a very promising year. : )
Deluge at Dawn - now The Rainy Thursdays
Before I left to fulfill my commitments to Seven
Witches (and my wife - lmao), I received a rush track from Erik
Andrew for the Deluge record, which I cranked out in 24 hours. The
track is called Suppress You, which I produced techno-style ala Garbage.
Well a lot has happened since then. The album has been completed and
mixed, and is now out for mastering, and the name of the band has changed to
The Rainy Thursdays.
They have a My Space page at http://www.myspace.com/therainythursdays
where you can check out this song out along with Push Me Away and Stay,
all in their entirety. The album is shaping into something pretty
awesome, and the response from the My Space community has been overwhelming.
In a few days the songs have received over 1500 plays combined.

More with Michael Riesenbeck
On my back to LA, I caught this bit of news that was posted
by my good friend
Michael Riesenbeck.
We are continuing to team-up with the hottest AOR acts in Europe, and have
begun writing an album of our own. His news update is here:
MICHAEL RIESENBECK AND ERIC RAGNO FORM ALLIANCE:
Michael Riesenbeck has just finished the
production and playing work for the upcoming Lec
Zorn Project album, which will be finally released in the US
Spring of this year. The collaboration of Eric
Ragno and Michael on his latest solo album and the Lec
Zorn Project has led to them to firing up a new band for a CD
project. Michael says: "We are currently writing and recording
demo's. Once we have enough songs we will decide on which vocalist, drummer
and bass player we'll invite to the band. Both of us are also going to play
on the next solo album of Michael Bormann
(ex-Jaded Heart). So, it's a busy year, as have been the last couple of
them."

In the Eye of Time
is the album of the Month over at Planeta

posted a
review of our album. Thanks to all our fans in
Argentina for your continued support!
March 1, 2005
Hey...is
it March? Well we blew through February so quick, I
guess March was bound to come around. I'm out here in
the middle of nowhere - quite literally - and I'm anxious to
get home to Los Angeles. Life is incredible right now,
and I really want to get back to it.

I
hardly got to spend any time with my new bride before getting
right back on the road again. I'm writing this in a
truck somewhere in Texas, while Kim & the boys are getting
comfortable in L.A. I can only imagine what I'll find
when I get home...but it feels good to get out of the cold
weather (we drove through 6 inches of snow at 20 degrees) and
head back to the Golden State. ; )

At least I've got my dad out here with me this
time. Having him here makes a world of difference.
We ate at a restaurant in Oklahoma this morning that has a few
buffalo (the state animal) caged outside. When you go
inside they serve buffalo steaks, buffalo burgers, etc.
To vegetarians like us, this is just hysterical...
I've had some time to iron out some business items this
week that I'm feeling pretty good about. I'm looking
forward to making some new announcements next week. A
lot of opportunities have come up lately, and I've been pondering
these out here on the Ponderosa. One of the
hardest things about this business is knowing when to jump on,
what to pass on, and when to jump off. Case in
point:
Dre
Allen Project films Video for Fly
The
Dre Allen Project finally released
the video for the first single, Fly. You can check
it out on the Movemakers website. I saw the video for the
first time last week, and it brought up mixed emotions. I get nostalgic for my time with the band, and felt bad that circumstances couldn't
allow me to appear in the video. But you wouldn't have seen me in it
anyway. Nearly the entire clip
focused on Dre singing against a green wall, with occasional shots of Dawn
Robinson sporting her new
look. The best part is during the bridge, when you can clearly see Peter
Lobo playing air drums! But other
than this and a quick shot of an overly made-up Bruce Lawrence strumming his guitar,
you'd never know that this was a band effort. Dawn has since left the
DAP and Movemakers once again, and while in New York last week I heard more
rumors about her possible reunion with En Vogue.
I hope everything works out for all of them...I have a lot of
love for these folks, and am hoping it all gets sorted
out.

Joey Vera on Fates Warning Video Shoot
Bassist extraordinaire Joey Vera (Fates Warning,
Anthrax) writes the following:
"Last weekend FATES WARNING shot a video for the tune 'Simple Human' from our new CD titled 'FWX'. It's basically a live performance video with some 'acting' talents courtesy of our lead singer Ray Alder. 'Less is more' — CUT!! Watch and learn. I haven't seen the edit yet but hopefully they'll cut out my heavy panting. It's been a while since I've shot a video and man was I sore the next day! Time off during the holidays is brutal."

Mr. & Mrs. Eric & Kimberly Ragno
Wow...what to say? I started writing this update
almost a week ago, but getting married really wiped me out! So many
friends and relatives joined us for a twilight cruise of the New York
skyline as we recited our vows...what a night. Although our pictures
won't be in for several weeks, within 24 hours our friends had sent us over
200 pictures from this memorable evening! You can view
this ever-growing photo gallery here. Special thanks to all the
friends and family who joined us for this once-in-a-lifetime moment. And
special thanks to Keith the superfan
who sent me the entire season of the new Battlestar Galactica
series on DVD to get through the stress! I finished the last episode
just a few hours before the wedding (although the series has barely started
on TV - don't ask me how that worked out...thanks man! ; ) I've
been receiving mail surrounding the 2nd anniversary of the Rhode Island
tragedy. I saw a lot of great video of Ty
Longley this week, which made me nostalgic for the days when we would
laugh our asses off! I'm finding that some people in the media are
genuinely trying to help, while others have made this an annual opportunity
to take a jab at Great White, and
rock music in general. I'm glad that we're all moving together towards
healing, and pray for those still suffering from this tragic event. Quite a
few rock news sites have posted stories about the
Seven Witches DVD taping last week, and the reprehensible behavior by
the staff at the club. Thanks to the folks who
came out to see the show and made this such a memorable night. I
had to forego this weekend's shows due to my wedding, but we're already
talking about the next leg in Europe. Meanwhile in Takara...
Blackmore's Castle Released This Month
This month Lion Music
releases Blackmore's Castle - a Tribute to Ritchie Blackmore. This
features the Takara rendition of Can't
Let You Go, and a great organ intro by yours truly! You can download
the intro here, or check
out pictures from the recording sessions here. The
reviews have been great, and Melodic
Rock.com even set up a special page around the release, which
you can find here. This release marks Michael
Flatter's departure from Takara, if only just for now.
Michael says, "...certain aspects of my current day to day life have
made it impossible for me to continue in any capacity as the lead singer for
Takara. I make this decision with a heavy heart, and truly wish nothing but
the best for the band in the future. Truth be known, Neal has passed up
certain opportunities in the past that may have been of great benefit to
Takara, only because I couldn't meet the obligation. I couldn't allow myself
to hold back the fellas any longer. I'd like to thank all the Takara
fans that have e-mailed me from time to time. Your kind words are never
taken for granted..." The band is actively searching for a replacement, and have
been receiving calls from some well-known singers! If
you are a singer who would like a shot at singing with us, e-mail
me.

February 14, 2005
Before I start, let me wish everyone a Happy Valentine's
Day! To all you net-nerds and music-heads that forgot to buy something
for your special someone, here is your reminder! It's Monday morning
and you still have a chance to make this right! So get out there and
do it! ; ) As for me, it's another week in New Jersey, where I spend
my last week as a
single man. Thanks to all the awesome folks who took the time to
sign our
wedding guestbook - especially you damn rock stars who are
generally too busy to read your own guestbooks!
That was very cool, and we thank you all! It's been a pretty exciting
time as I catch up with old
friends, and go through the final plans for a wedding over the New York
skyline. As busy as that has been (and it has been, believe me) things
on the musical front rage on! Let's talk about that a
bit, starting with a news item I was involved with that ran on
a few rock sites this week:
The Seven Witches
DVD Taping

(I'm
the one on the fair right - the one with no hair. ; )
The Seven Witches
U.S. tour continues in support of the band's latest release, Year
of the Witch. The group performed a special, free show
on February 19th at the Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown, Pa-which
was recorded for an upcoming live DVD. The show was attended
by fans from around the country, as well as special guests
including Ted Poley of Danger Danger
and Eric Ragno of Vox
Tempus. Eric also performed with the band.
Pictures of this amazing show can be found
here. .
The show began at 9pm. At 9:50pm,
a club employee took the stage and announced that anyone
under 21 years old (pretty much half of the audience) would have
to leave. The club had billed this as an all-ages event but
did not mention that anyone under 21 would have to leave by 10:00! Jack
Frost (guitars) was furious but there was nothing
the band could do. The crowd broke into a chant of
"bullshit! bullshit!". A few kids left
but the majority stayed. The band came back out and James
Rivera [vocals] commented that "We are the children
of metal and they want to take that away from us! Fucking
stick around. I'm not making you go home." Two
or three songs later, security started going through the audience
and removing people under 21 years old - in some cases by physically
picking them up by the shoulders and carrying them out the
door! Considering the circumstances, this
situation could easily have gotten out of control - but
to the fan's credit they did not react and handled it
peacefully.
Many opponents of modern music claim
that heavy metal brings out the worst in today's youth and incites
them into violent acts. This show clearly proves that a
group of young people can come together for a loud concert of
nasty metal music and still maintain decorum - especially
when provoked in a way as grievous as this. With the band's
stellar performances, the outrageous behavior by the venue, and
the cool demeanor of the fans, this special DVD event will be
talked about for some time.
Larry King Interviews Great White
As we come upon the second anniversary of the tragic fire in
Rhode Island, members of Great White
appeared on Larry King this week alongside the father of my deceased friend Ty
Longley, and some of the survivors who have ongoing civil suits against
the band, the club owners, etc. This was painful to watch, especially
knowing some of the people involved. Watching the repeated footage
from Rhode Island was no picnic either - but I guess this helps ensure that
people will never forget what happened there, or Ty's
memory. I guess it gets a little easier as time goes on - but the
scars will always remain, especially for the band itself. In regards
to making new music, Jack Russell comments,
"Right now our focus is on just helping raise awareness. I haven't been in that space yet, even almost two years
later. I just haven't felt like writing songs yet, and I kind of feel
like it's another hurdle I need to overcome. But my main goal is to
keep the band touring and to try to raise money [for the fund]."
Vox Tempus CD entering second pressing
On
a lighter note, the Vox Tempus CD is sold out! We are beginning
a second run this week with some new partners, which we will announce
shortly. Since we are doing this new run, it gives us an opportunity
to revisit some of the typing errors and thank-you lists that we
prepared for the initial run. So for all you skeezers, skanks
and scallywags who jerked us around over the last year, you're off the
list! And to the tried and true friends who continue to help us
move forward, please accept our eternal gratitude, both in our hearts
and in the liner notes of this new CD. Thanks!
February 9, 2005
I heard
from Ty Longley's mom, who says that
Ty's dad will be joining Jack Russell and Mark Kendall of Great
White on CNN with Larry
King Live. This will be on February 9th, Wednesday night (check your
local listings). I will be on a plane for Jersey at that time, but I'm
sure that ten of you will send me tapes of it! (Thanks, you guys still
rule!)
The
second anniversary of the Station Fire in Rhode Island is in less than two
weeks - the day before my wedding. I can't believe it's been two years
since we lost such a gentle soul. The
Station Family Fund has raised just over a half million dollars to date -
but they still need your help. Please visit
their website for more info on how you can help.
February 7, 2005
I've been locked up in the house a lot this week, in an effort to wrap up these
outstanding projects on my desk. It hasn't been
easy, but I've been making a lot of headway. This includes the fifth
(and final?) Deluge
track for me, a synth-heavy number called Suppress You. (38 tracks
of keyboards in 24 hours? I think that's a record even for ME. ;
) Any projects that don't get finished by Tuesday will come with me to
New York, where they'll be finished up at China Blue East.
And now it looks like
I'm fighting off some kind of flu bug ...damn. I want to apologize
to the folks who have been waiting patiently for me - it feels good to reach
completion on some of these projects. I didn't expect to be this
busy! I didn't expect to be invited to perform these Seven
Witches dates, and I certainly didn't expect to be getting
married next month. ; )
It's hard to believe how
much work it takes to plan a wedding, even one as intimate as this one. I set up a
Wedding Page for me & Kim, along
with a Guestbook
that has gotten some interesting posts from a lot of old friends. Thanks for
that. It's an exiting time, and I'm grateful to have so many friends
weighing in with their well-wishes. I leave for Jersey this week,
so if you're on the coast and want to hang out before I'm a "kept
man", this may be it for awhile. After that I'll be...
On the road with Seven Witches

(Picture courtesy of rock photog Nathan
Ian Bradley)
After our initial splash at NAMM last month, I'll be playing select dates
with Seven
Witches this month, including the DVD taping in
Allentown, PA on February 12. Admission is free, and I'll sign whatever you bring with you.
The band, featuring former Savatage guitarist Jack Frost and
Helstar singer James Rivera, have moved the
show to the Crocodile Rock in Allentown, PA from the previously announced The Freight Yard. The
band performing material from all five of their albums, including their most recent effort,
Year of the Witch, available now on Sanctuary Records.
Pictures Omitted from Takara Album?
One of the more embarrassing moments at NAMM this year was when Tommy from
TKL discovered that my picture was omitted from the Lion Records reissue of
Takara's Eternity album. Other than some very good photographs of
Neal, the photo's are pretty awful - and mine was omitted completely! I was not thrilled at all, but the
upshot is that it gave Neal & I a chance to catch up with each other's
lives. He was kind enough to post the following on the Takara website
this week:
First off, in February Lion Music will be releasing a Tribute CD to Ritchie
Blackmore. We will be featured on one song. The song "Can't Let You
Go" from the Rainbow CD "Bent out of Shape" We were very
pleased to do this song, and really enjoyed doing too. We hope you enjoy
it too. You may purchase this CD through the Lion Music Website. www.lionmusic.com
Next, as many people know Lion Music rereleased all the previous Takara
CD's. With the re-release of these CD's came some booklet changes etc.
With the re-release of Takara "Best Of" "Eternity"
came many picture and booklet changes. In the process of doing these
changes Keyboardist Eric Ragno's picture's were omitted. Takara and Lion
music appoligize and to anyone who might have been mislead by this
mistake. Takara and Lion music apologize to Eric too for this omission to
the booklet. Please note, Eric name remains in the credits , just not his
picture's.
We are currently at work on songs for the next CD. We hope to have a late
05" release. More news later on this. Cheers,
Takara
The
new Enchant DVD is here!

Our friends in Enchant
released their live DVD this week, and I'd like to thank my friends at CD
Inzane for hooking me up with a copy. In the meantime, I've posted
a clip of my
interview segment from the second disc. If this isn't a good
commercial for the new DVD, I don't know what it! Available everywhere
music is sold!
January 31, 2005
THEY...CALL...ME...DRAMA!!!! (Free CD to the
first person who guesses where that reference comes from. ; )
Man, what a crazy time to be alive. The NAMM show
hasn't even been over a week, and there have already been more shakeups
than a snow globe. So let's break it
down: I finished the fourth album track from Deluge at Dawn,
and plan to complete the fifth (and final?) track this week. I am
rehearsing songs for select
Seven
Witches dates, including the DVD taping in Allentown on
February 12th (free show, come one come all!). There has been some
press about my NAMM appearances with Jack
Frost at the TKL booth, which has
been very kind - thank you all for that. It has been one of those
weeks.
I started rehearsals
with Tim Tame (Enuff Znuff) and Dave Filice (Great White) on our new
project, which is moving very quickly. I have been talking with the
guys in Angel Rage about their
upcoming disc, and singer Steve Braun will be in town next week so we can
all sit down and plan the next step. Or, not. I guess it
depends on what magazine you are reading. It has been one of those
weeks.
I had a tree fall on my roof from the intense rains and
floods we had in LA this month. And, Kim & I are sorting
through the realities of getting married in Jersey next month, as our
friends and families share different reactions across the board.
Yeah...it has been one of those weeks...
Michael Schenker/Graham
Bonnet/Kelly Keeling/Robin McAuley
Last weekend I attended NAMM's "Night Of Guitar" concert,
featuring an amazing headlining set by Michael
Schenker , along with the phenomenal George
Lynch. (Also on the bill were Gilby Clarke, Bruce Kulick, and Frank Hannon of Tesla.)
My friend
Kelly Keeling sang lead for Lynch,
and later sang for Michael Schenker as well, taking turns song-for-song with
the awesome Robin
McAuley! Kelly sang many of the later day Schenker
songs, while Robin sang such classic UFO hits as Lights Out in London.
Wild stuff!
Graham Bonnet w/Michael Schenker
Also slated to sing with Schenker during the finale was the legendary singer Graham
Bonnet. Graham rehearsed with him right up to the show, but fell ill
the day before, and couldn't make it. For those who doubt that this
dream pair-up was actually set to happen, I've attached the above
photo. : )
As
for Kelly Keeling...as if he
wasn't busy enough, he still found time to play this week's Prog Night
featuring keyboard virtuoso (and Vox
Tempus engineer) Erik Norlander.
He is currently working on his autobiography, documenting his time in Baton
Rouge, Blue Murder, MSG, etc - as well as maintaining his constant lineup of
rotating gigs. "Michael Schenker has asked me to appear on his newest album and to write a few songs as has [Don] Dokken. If I could be cloned it may help my state but I simply can't be in three places at once. I hope they wait for me...All I can say is God has a plan and purpose for me to have made it through the last 35 albums and around the world a few times non-stop."
Fates Warning Update - Headway Festival April 3
I spent some time at NAMM with the guys from Enchant,
who are headlining Day 2 of the Headway Festival in Holland
this April.
We went over to harass Mike Portnoy
of Dream Theater, who will be
playing drums for Fates Warning when
they headline Day 1. Fates will kick off their European tour in
February with Spock's Beard
drummer Nick D'Virgilio (Tears for Fears, Mike
Keneally & Kevin Gilbert) filling the
seat vacated by departing drummer Mark
Zonder. Nick says "Fates is a great rock band that I had the good fortune to tour with a couple of years
ago. "They have a new CD out and Europe is calling."
These will likely be the only Fates shows in Europe this year.
After April, guitarist Jim Matheos will be focusing on a new album from OSI (OFFICE OF STRATEGIC INFLUENCE).
This is the supergroup featuring Jim, the aforementioned Mike Portnoy and
Kevin Moore of Dream Theater.
As for now, tonight Fates is filming a video for "Simple Human",
the first single off their latest release, FWX. Sadly, it is a closed set. :

January 27, 2005
Well, the NAMM show is over and I am exhausted! I've
spent a lot of time with some good friends this weekend, and it seems like
we're all moving a little further, and getting a little older. I
spent less time goofing off this year, and spent most of the weekend
checking out new gear, meeting with manufacturers, and exchanging
maddening solos at the TKL booth with
Jack Frost! Thanks to Jack, Tommy and everyone at TKL for making
this a memorable weekend for all of us.
Does I really look like Udo Dirkschneider?
Phil at GMP
started teasing me about looking like Udo
from Accept, and convinced me to start doing Udo impressions. By the
end of the weekend there were NAMM members, musicians and even a Hollywood
promoter trying to convince me to front an Accept tribute band with an all-star backing lineup...?
There are many stories that I'd like to share, that I'm
sure will find their way here in the coming weeks. I had a blast
with Jack (as always), and performed together multiple times at the TKL
booth. I sat at the bar with Neal Schon
of Journey, I had dinner with Mike Duda
of WASP, and I spent more time Peter Lobo
this week than I did when we were on tour! I spent a lot of time
with Doug Ott and Ed Platt of Enchant,
allowing Doug to preview some of the video
footage from the Dawn Robinson tour. I also spent a lot of time with
the makers of the
new Keytar, and am looking forward to exploring our future
together. I met so many great people and got to laugh, drink, and
tease both rock stars and Playmates until the wee hours...does it
get much better than that?
I've posted a few news items to the rock websites from this weekend, including pictures from this show. You can find some
of these items here:
Seven Witches at NAMM show - Pictures available

This
weekend at the NAMM show, Seven
Witches guitarist Jack Frost (Savatage) announced new endorsements
with B.C. Rich Guitars and Rocktron
pedals.
Jack wowed NAMM audiences during several clinics for TKL
Cases, also featuring Vox
Tempus keyboardist (and fellow TKL endorsee) Eric
Ragno. Photos can be found here.
Vox Tempus Appearances at

This year's NAMM convention was
a working weekend for members of the Vox Tempus family! Both Eric Ragno & Gregg Bissonette
participated in signing sessions, Q&A, and clinics for Roland,
Zildjian, TKL
and Keytar, respectively. Eric comments "It was great to talk to
the diehard fans this time around, and to shred for some new ones!" Gregg adds "I
have so much fun with you
guys...I can't wait for the next album!" Erik Norlander
comments "The new album sounds great! The band has come a long
way." Photos
can be found here.

January 21, 2005
Late breaking news - for all you NAMM attendees - I will be
performing with Jack Frost at the TKL
booth on Friday at 12:00 noon, and on Friday/Saturday at the B52
Amplification booth from 1:00 to 4:00.
If you want to get your stuff signed, this is a good
opportunity to get both Gregg & myself on the same
day! Also, Gregg is appearing at the Roland booth
(demonstrating their latest drum line) every morning at 10
AM. If you go, be sure to bring him a breakfast
burrito. : )

I don't generally post updates mid-week, but the NAMM show starts tomorrow
and I doubt I will get to a computer anytime soon. I've been busting
my ass since Kim went home, and am typing this on my laptop while my studio
computer dumps new mixes for Jack Frost, who arrives tomorrow. I also
have to finish up a new Deluge at Dawn
track, do my dishes and pack for
Anaheim. Hopefully I'll have time to watch The West Wing...
The plan right now is for me to join Jack in New Jersey once the NAMM
show is over, and rehearse for the Seven
Witches ' U.S. tour in support of
their latest release from Sanctuary
Records, Year of the Witch.
This wraps up with the taping of the new Seven Witches DVD, after which we come
back to finish Jack's solo CD, Frost. By then we should know
more about the overseas dates.
In other news, I posted some new video this week on the
Video page. This includes some great clips from some sold-out
shows by the Dre Allen Project, as well as the solo set by
Dawn
Robinson (of En Vogue,
Lucy
Pearl). I am particularly proud of how our rendition of Free
Your Mind came off before a packed house. Some folks thought I was
crazy for putting together an arrangement like this, but scores of screaming
fans can't be wrong. ; )
Lion
Music sets release date for Ritchie Blackmore Tribute
Lion Music
has set February 25th as the tentative release date for the upcoming Ritchie
Blackmore tribute album, Blackmore's Castle
Vol. II. - a tribute to Ritchie Blackmore. This will feature my
most recent work with Takara, a
cover of Can't Let You Go by Rainbow - complete with a
signature keyboard intro! Thanks to my good friend Neal Grusky for
giving me the space to stretch out on this one. : )
Gregg Bissonette NAMM Appearance Schedule

Vox Tempus
drummer Gregg Bissonette will be appearing at the
NAMM show this weekend at the Kaces booth (a division of Ace
Products), to promote the Gregg Bissonette stick bag. He will be
appearing on Friday and Saturday, and will be sign autographs from 11:15-12:15
PM. Bring your Vox Tempus CD's!
Robin McAuley NAMM Appearance
Robin McAuley
will be on stage this
Thursday with Michael Schenker for the
first time in 13 years. He is singing with Schenker at the NAMM
Guitar night in Long Beach, California. George Lynch is rumored to be
playing as well, and of course, we're not gonna miss Robin or Lynch,
so...for more information visit www.robinmcauley.com/namm.html
Robin's new band, Bleed
(featuring Takara bassist
Bjorn Englen and ex-Seven
Witches drummer Craig
Anderson) have just released an EP, which features the
songs Falling
Down . Thrown It All Away . Tail Of The Gun . We
Breathe. The EP is available on
from
Robin's website.

It's been a pretty amazing New Year, and the fun hasn't stopped! So
many doors have opened, and every time I answer the phone there is a new opportunity waiting on the line! I didn't think anything could beat 2004, but
here we are... ; )

Kim goes home (yes that
is my house)
Kim & the kids flew home this afternoon, and it's strange being in an
empty house again. I've uploaded a pile of pictures from their visit on
her own site, which also has its own Guestbook. We haven't been apart
for more than two weeks since the
end of the Dre Allen/Dawn Robinson tour, and it looks like I'm gonna maintain
that schedule for awhile. There is so much stuff going on right
now...The NAMM show starts next week, and it's shaping up to be the most
exciting one yet! I got a call from my friends in Enchant,
who are coming down for the show, and report that the audio issues with
their new DVD have now been fixed. Expect it to hit the shelves early
next month.
Soul
SirkUS Re-records Drum Tracks
The first
Soul SirkUS shows were supposed to take place last week, but drummer Deen
Castronovo dropped out. With Kim in town, let's just say I had
some special plans for that show - and I was really let down
that it didn't happen. That's just the way it goes I
guess. Awhile back, Vox
Tempus faced a problem where we had to postpone our
release until we could replace the drum tracks from our
drummer, who abruptly dropped out. We met with several
drummers, including an Australian prodigy named Virgil Donati.
I'm glad to say that Virgil has now been enlisted for this
same task on the new Soul SirkUS album, with new pictures being
done this week. Jeff
Scott Soto
adds, "the album is being repackaged for a worldwide release (yes, in stores). The version with Deen will now be a
collector's item & no more will be pressed after the lot left are sold. There is much on the
horizon folks...JSS"
Seven
Witches DVD Taping
I've been in touch with Jack Frost pretty
frequently now as we discuss the Seven
Witches tour dates, and writing for his upcoming solo album,
which will feature special guests like Ted
Poley of Danger Danger. The U.S. leg will wrap with
a special taping for a live DVD at the Allentown show. This is
a free show, so all you metal heads in Pennsylvania, get out
there! Keep an eye on the
website for all the latest developments.
Gregg Bissonette Releases New Instructional DVD

Vox
Tempus drummer Gregg Bissonette has released a
new instructional DVD titled Musical Drumming in Different Styles.
This double disc set is the third instructional package to come from Gregg,
and contains over four hours of footage. In addition to various
techniques, Gregg also covers topics such as Keeping a Positive Attitude, How
to Audition, Playing a Musical Drum Solo, and Playing the Right Part for the
Song. More information on this special package can be found on
Gregg's website.
January 10, 2005
It's been a full week with Kim & the kids,
as they continue to check out Southern California. I've
been posting pics of this mad adventure here,
as everyone feels out the City of Angels. It's a special
time right now, and I feel more content than I have in
years. : )
at Lake Shrine with Kieran
I heard from Tim Tame this week, and we're
hoping to re-ignite our secret project that we started back in
May. I'm also in discussions with Jack about his
upcoming tour in support of his new album Year of the Witch
- so there's a good chance I'll be going back to Jersey again
after NAMM wraps up. I've receive yet another set of Lec
Zorn mixes to review, which will hopefully be the final FINAL
ones! And I'm working on the fourth track with Deluge at Dawn,
a track simply titled Pretty Song.
Deen Castronovo
leaves Soul SirkUS/Shows Rescheduled
I got a note from JSS
this week with some updates regarding Soul
SirkUS. There were lots of plans afoot this month, including a
bunch of shows and filming of the band's first video, Coming Home.
The scheduling was tight due to Neal's schedule with Journey,
and JSS's already busy routine! The week of the first show, drummer Deen
Castronovo was "diagnosed with extreme dehydration and
exhaustion, and has been ordered by his doctors to rest". Deen has
since stepped down from his role in in the band, stating that the workload
of both bands "left him little to no personal/family time."
with Virgil Donati
His replacement will be super-drummer Virgil Donati,
who has made a considerable splash in the prog world since relocating from
his native Australia. Virgil comes highly recommended from his work
with Planet X, and at one point was
considered to drum with Vox Tempus.
Soul Sirkus' schedule will tentatively resume in April.
Lana Lane Celebrates 10th
Anniversary with new album
xx
To celebrate her 10th Anniversary in music, our friend Lana Lane
is recording a symphonic rock concept album based on the famous "Macbeth" play by vanguard English poet, William Shakespeare. Basic tracks were recorded in December at Sound Park Studio in
Schiedam, The Netherlands under the direction of keyboard wizard and producer
(and Vox Tempus engineer) Erik Norlander with
their European touring musicians Peer Verschuren (guitar), Ernst Van Ee (drums) and Kristoffer Gildenlöw (bass).
Jack Frost announced BC Rich Endorsement
Jack Frost has recorded and/or
toured with members of Overkill, W.A.S.P., The Misfits, Annihilator
and Rainbow and has also been a member of metal favorites Savatage and
Metalium. Most recently he has achieved success as the guitar player
for the bands Seven Witches and The Bronx Casket Company both of which
did well enough in the metal havens of Europe and Asia to enable the
bands to secure worldwide record deals. Jack is now proud to
announce his new alliance with BC Rich. “I’ve always wanted to play BC Rich because to me they are
everything that metal is- loud, original and screaming,” said Jack.
“I could’ve played other guitars but I wanted a BC Rich because I
wanted the best!” 2005 promises to be another sleepless year for Jack. May will see the
release of his sophomore solo CD as well as the new Bronx Casket
Company CD. Also a new Seven Witches DVD entitled “Years Of The
Witch” is scheduled for release in June. “We are pleased that Jack has picked BC Rich guitars as his weapon
of choice,” said Rock Clouser- Product Manager for BC Rich. “He
needs a guitar that will deliver and BC Rich will do just that.”
Look for me on tour with Jack & the Witches later this year.
January 2, 2005
Well it's a whole New Year, and I finally
cleaned up this page so it's a little easier to read!
New Years was pretty awesome, with Kim and the kids arriving
the day before. It's really something special, and even
the rainy season hasn't been able to damper our
spirits.
I can't believe we're about to start another year, and I
hope everybody is ready for it! I can't imagine that 2005 could get
any better...2004 was such an incredible year, I
don't know how we're gonna top it. For those of you who haven't kept
up through 2004 (and don't feel like reading through the
old news), it went like this: we started with the re-release of Takara's
Eternity album (the last with
singer Jeff Scott Soto), along
with Michael Riesenbeck's Shouting
Silence CD.
Then came the long-awaited release of Vox Tempus' debut
In the Eye of Time, whose first single For Every Life received worldwide
exposure, garnering some inspiring mail from families of the Rhode Island tragedy.
Cuts from the album were then featured on compilation CD's
from ProgPower
(where we made a significant splash at the festival), Metal Storm and
Power Play Magazine.
I toured the U.S. and Canada (and did considerable TV) with the Dre Allen Project and
Dawn
Robinson (of En Vogue & Lucy
Pearl fame), putting together a rocked-out set to help pave the way for her comeback.
I witnessed first hand the formation of the supergroup
Soul SirkUS, and watched it build into an international force to
be reckoned with! Ditto with Robin
McAuley's new act, Bleed. I went to San Francisco to be a
part of Enchant's new DVD, and worked
on pre-production for the latest Seven
Witches record. I got to play with my my hometown heroes in
Xenon,
and recorded tracks for upcoming albums from Lec
Zorn,
Deluge at Dawn, and the Rainbow tribute with Takara.
Then there was the human
side. I lost some friends, I made new ones...and then I
lost those too. I spent nearly 1/4 the year in Jersey,
and watched my aunt pass away. Billy
came to town and we traveled up and down California for a
month. I played in Las Vegas at Joe
Jackson's birthday party! And I promoted the heck
out of everything, garnering
rave reviews from around the world, and several in-depth
interviews. I played New York for the first time since 1991, sharing an
all-star lineup in front of my friends from high school. I fell in love and
got proposed to...and she's spending New Years with me here in LA right
now.
Yeah...I think that sums it all up. Now
let's start the show:
Vox Tempus ride
the Top 10 at

Our debut album In the Eye
of Time continues to dominate the Top 10 at Just for
Kicks Music! Thanks to our many fans in Europe who help to keep us
there! Be sure to check
out our downloads page for new audio clips, as well as new video of our
exciting drum sessions with the extraordinary Gregg
Bissonette!
An
Update from Jack Frost
Hi, Jack here,
I just signed a major deal with Mausoleum Records for my sophomore
solo dist frost. I will enter the studio on Monday the 13th to start
basic tracks. It will feature a lot of cool guest so stay tuned to
the website for more details. The Witches will start our tour on
Feb. 1 in Cleveland and end in March, it should be a very long one (hehe). I'll also be at NAMM 2005 in LA in Jan for some of my
endorsement deals giving cd's away and promoting the Witches. Also
on the witches front this is our last record for Sanctuary. We thank
them for everything and the years of help and support they've given us. Not to worry though, we have many offers on the
table and one
looks close, cant say who just yet, but we are very happy with what
they're offering. In closing, I would like to wish everyone a very
metal holiday season, and we'll see you all in the 05. God bless, Frost
Soul
SirkUS filming show for new video
Soul SirkUS
is performing seven dates in California this month, including one in
guitarist Neal Schon's home town of San Francisco.
The Fillmore show on
January 13 will feature special guests, and will be filmed and
recorded for possible future release. In addition, footage
from the shows will be used in the video for Coming
Home, which will be dedicated to and will include
footage of the U.S. troops in Iraq. Once the live dates are completed, Neal returns to Journey the first week
of February to record the highly anticipated brand new studio album.
All the best for the New Year!
